How To Raise Money For Schools – With A Tin Of Baked Beans
Baked beans. The staple tea time food for busy mums and a firm favourite with students of all ages.
When first introduced to the UK in 1886 they were sold as a high priced exotic food at Fortnum & Mason – how things have changed! That said a tin of baked beans can range in price from the cheapest of own brand ‘bullets’ to expensive organic fare. You pays your money and takes your choice.
But, you ask, how can I raise money for my school with a tin of beans?
Well for your delectation I give you three and a half ideas for raising money with a tin of beans. They’re a great way to fundraise money, almost free and definitely simple. Plus they’ll appeal to all children and their parents.
Firstly may I present the ‘Great Baked Bean Eating Competition’. This idea is so popular it shares space in the Guinness Book of World Records, amongst the tallest, fastest and heaviest things on the planet.
The idea is simple. Eat as many baked beans as you can in 5 minutes, one by one, on the end of a cocktail stick. Children can pay to enter the competition, spectators can pay to watch and all funds raised can go towards the school. If you’re really serious you can have heats during the lunch hour with a big finale one evening when your best bean eaters try to break the World Record. Just think of it, not only will you raise money for the school but you’ll also become famous!
Secondly there is the ‘Baked Bean Auction’. Buy a tin of baked beans and auction them off one by one. Don’t laugh, it’s been done before and is proven to work on eBay.
The school may decide to hold the auction nearer to home but by setting up a fundraising account on eBay you’ll have the world at your feet. At £1 a bean, the money will soon start rolling in.
The third idea will really appeal to those young at heart – although perhaps not with the person who does the washing. This idea to raise money is the ‘Baked Beans In The Boots Challenge’.
Basically fill your boots with baked beans, put the boots on and wear them for the day. I’ve done this myself and the feeling is strange to say the least. That said I did line my wellies with plastic bags first.
Extra money can be raised by having a bean eating competition using the pureed beans at the end of the day – perhaps more suited to the more senior students!
So as you can see, with a bit of imagination and a tin of beans you too can raise money for your school. Who says fundraising is boring!
In case you thought I’d forgotten, the third and a half idea is to use the baked bean can as a collecting tin for money.

About the Author
Following a highly successful career in London where I owned my own marketing and design company catering for both multinational corporations and small local businesses I decided to “leave the rat race” and establish a free fundraising infrastructure for schools, charities, social groups and families.
The result is www.SimpleFundraising.co.uk
Developing this free fundraising service, along with my brother, has allowed me to achieve a work-life-balance that my family deserve.
Not every group, charity or social organisation can afford a full-time, or even a part-time, fundraiser which is why www.SimpleFundraising.co.uk is completely free.
I am dedicated to helping groups of all sizes in their fundraising efforts and, being a rather creative individual, I continually find ways to help organisations raise money for their cause.
